As the owner of three fantastic ferrets, whom I have had for over 3 years, keeping an eye on my Jills (female ferrets) during this period really is a matter of life and death. For first time ferret owners or those new to owning Jills, you may have heard that females can die during heat.

This is totally correct but easily preventable.

If you have unsterilized Jills in your care, during the heat season, they are at risk of developing what is known as aplastic anemia, a serious condition where red blood cells cut off supply to bone marrow potentially having fatal consequences if not addressed. 

Steps you can undertake to protect your ferrets include: 

• Undergoing sterilization
• Hormone Injections  
• Mating with a male

Intervening before the heat season begins can improve the life of your Jills dramatically and save you and your ferrets any worry or stress during this time. 

So, with everything you need to know about ferret heat below, keep reading our guide on how to keep your Jills safe and sound during the months of March to September.

Ferret Heat Cycle

As female ferrets reach sexual maturity around 8-12 months, they will enter heat season at the start of spring until fall. 

Oestrus or more commonly known as heat is the period of time in an animal’s reproductive cycle when they are receptive to a male. Ferrets enter heat every year so are known as seasonally polyoestrous species. 

Jills will remain in heat if not mated or given medical intervention right up until their season ends. It is during this time that if left unmated or untreated, aplastic anemia can occur leading to potentially fatal consequences and your female could die if left unmated. 

It is important to know that some ferrets may enter heat before they reach 12 months of age.

During our Jill’s first year, I was advised by a veterinarian my Jills would be fine without any intervention as he suggested ferrets are more prone to effects after their second season.

However, after one of my Jills, Lilo, became extremely ill weeks after seeing the vet, we decided seasonal intervention was vital, no matter their age. 

Signs Your Ferret Is In Heat

In the weeks leading up to the beginning of spring, it is vital that you keep an eye on both physical and behavioral changes in your Jills. The following symptoms are as follows:

• Enlarged//Swollen Vulva
• Weight Loss
• Tiredness/Fatigue
• Thinning Fur

Enlarged Vulva

One of the major signs your ferret is in heat is an enlarged vulva. This is located at the base of the Jill’s body, between their legs and just above their tail. During their heat season, their vulva’s will swell and almost triple in size. 

This can lead to your ferret scooting and shuffling across the floor, as the area can be extremely sensitive and sore for them. Try to keep this area clean and tidy for your ferrets as the likelihood of infection is amplified during this time. 

Weight Loss

Weight loss is another significant symptom of ferret heat.

Your Jill may lose a significant portion of their body weight during the time heat occurs. It is vital to keep their exercise to a minimum and food intake higher than usual.

To reduce the risk of anemia, feed your Jills raw treats such as diced beef/steak which can help fuel their bodies with vital vitamins and minerals. 

Every week, whilst on heat, I feed my two Jills 5-6 chunks of diced beef cut into ferret-size pieces to give their bodies a much-needed nutritional boost. 

Extreme Lethargy

You may notice that your Jills become increasingly lethargic during heat.

Their exercise levels tend to drop and they will sleep for longer than usual. This is a completely normal reaction to their season and nothing dramatic to worry about.

However, if you notice your ferret struggling to wake from sleep, more than usual, then seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. 

Ferrets tend to fall into a “Dead Sleep” quite regularly, which is normal behavior, however, during heat, extreme lethargy can disguise itself and be left unnoticed until it’s too late. 

How to Treat Ferret Heat

Heat can be treated mid-season and prevented before it occurs in spring.

It is recommended to prevent the onset of heat rather than to treat the symptoms. However, if you are a first-time ferret owner and unsure of what is happening to your ferret and notice symptoms such as their enlarged vulvas and weight loss, treating heat is better than letting nature take its course. 

If you believe your ferret is in heat, it is vital to seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible as your female ferret could die without medical intervention.

However, there are more cost-effective and natural ways of treating your ferrets without seeing a veterinarian whatsoever. 

As ferrets are susceptible to the effects of heat from lack of mating, the most natural and effective way of treating your Jill (or Jills) is to mate them with a vasectomized hob.

This is a male ferret that can no longer produce young when mated with a female.

Asking local ferret groups or even purchasing a vasectomized hob, for the sole purpose of mating, really could save your Jill’s life year upon year. 

How To Prevent Ferret Heat

As the age-old saying goes, prevention is always better than cure.

As mentioned above, you can prevent your Jills from entering heat by mating with a vasectomized hob.

However, if you’re like me and don’t want your Jills exposed to a mate as ferret mating can be extremely aggressive and can often injure Jills in the process, then veterinary treatment may be more suited to your furry friends. 

There are two main treatments to help prevent the onset of heat in your Jills. 

1. Spaying your Jills – This involves removing both the uterus and the ovaries and is extremely similar to the procedures done on our cats and dogs. 

However, as they are dramatically smaller in size, this procedure can be very intrusive and dangerous for ferrets but will prevent heat symptoms for the remainder of their life and can reduce the smell from sweat glands meaning no more smelly spells. 

2. Hormone Injection – This is a non-intrusive treatment for your little furry friends and can be done with a simple trip to the vet. Prior to heat, or shortly after, a hormone injection, proligestone, can be given to your Jills to bring them out of heat. This is commonly referred to as the “Jill Jab”.  

This is my top choice for treating my two Jills. Every year, around the beginning of March, they are taken to the vets and within the blink of an eye, their Jill Jab is done keeping them safe and sound for the next few months. 

However, it is important to note that there are some Jills who may require more than 1 jab during the season but this is very rare and is often no more than one more treatment. This reduces the likelihood of anemia without any intrusive surgeries or worries about aggressive mating.

Meat. Meat. Meat. At the heart of your ferret’s food should be a minimum of 30% meat content. Any less and your ferret is lacking the required amount of nutrients to support their development.

On the other hand, my hob, Kiko, is a climber and loves to swing and climb on ladders and relax in his hammock.

A few things though that are essential regardless include:

How to Set Up a Ferret Cage

From blankets to litter, food bowls to water, understanding what you need in your ferret’s cage will ensure that they have everything they need to make their home a haven of happiness.

Before considering your ferret’s cage setup, it is important to buy a cage that will provide the pawfect home for your furry friend. Once you have the best cage in your home, you can then kit it out with everything your ferret will love and adore.

What is a proper cage for a ferret?

When it comes to choosing your ferret’s cage, the three S’s are the most important factors you should look for: Safety, Space, and Stimulation. 

1. Safety – Your ferret’s cage should have secure doors and minimal space between the bars. Ferrets are expert escapologists and slide and slither in and out of tiny areas so be sure to select a cage that keeps your ferret safe and secure. 

2. Space – Even if you one have one furry friend in a cage, there should be enough space for them to run and play. Avoid cages for small pets, such as hamsters, as these cages (even when your ferret is a baby) will not provide enough comfort through development. Have multiple ferrets? Choose at least a two or three-tiered cage as this will ensure there is enough space for your ferrets to run and roam. 

3. Stimulation – Despite sleeping for a large portion of the day, when awake, your ferrets require at least 1 to 2 hours of play. As the owner of a 3-year-old hob who loves to climb, invest in hanging ladders, swings, and hammocks to keep your ferret stimulated during play.

Organizing your Ferret’s Cage

For the best ferret cage setup, we advise:

1. Place between 3 or 4 ramps and platforms within the cage. You should aim to give platforms and ladders easy access (for younger ferrets ensure their layout isn’t “too easy” to run and scurry as an element of difficulty can aid stimulation).

2. Hang toys and hammocks from the roof for stimulation and comfort. Opt for hammocks that are larger than your ferret’s size for supreme comfort and coziness. If you have multiple ferrets, try and find a hammock with several layers. 

3. Place litter boxes and food well away from each other. It’s important to remember that ferrets love to bang and crash into anything that isn’t fixed to their cage so when choosing bowls, choose ones that attach to the bars of their cage to stop any unwanted mess or spills. 

4. Line any plastic bottoms with blankets or substrate to prevent destructive chewing of their cages’ lining. This often wears over time, so it’s best to cover it up to stop any cracks from appearing that can be a nuisance or problem to fix/replace. 

When organizing your ferret’s cage, it’s always important to place their litter tray away from where they sleep and eat.

Despite many efforts, my ferrets hate using a litter box so they do their business on their cage’s bottom platforms (covered with paper towel). This is placed firmly away from their food, water, and toys. 

Choose the Best Bedding

As natural burrowers and diggers, ferrets require bedding to support their natural instincts.

When looking for ferret bedding, choose one that focuses on comfort and safety.

Ferrets are prone to respiratory issues so selecting bedding that is dust-free can ensure no nastiness enters their sensitive noses. For indoor use, bedding types include:

• Recycled Paper
• Cotton
• Straw
• Fabric

We would strongly advise against bedding such as straw and wood chippings as these can be problematic for your ferret’s noses.

Regularly cleaning and changing your ferret’s bedding is vital for hygiene. You should aim to change your ferret’s litter box daily (if not twice daily) and their bedding once a week to stop any unwanted odors lingering around their room.

There really is nothing cuter than seeing your furry friend chilling in a hammock.

For maximum comfort, choose a hammock significantly larger than your ferret’s size and ensure it is lined with soft fabric such as fleece or plush for the best comfort and support.

Hammocks are a great way of providing a secure sleeping space for your furry friend. 

As ferrets naturally love to climb and clamber, hammocks allow for play through the daylight hours and a comforting place to rest when the lights go out.

I’ve found paper towels a useful alternative for my pets because they can be easily removed and replaced. Paper towels are also a great alternative if you wish to buy essentials for your ferret’s cage alongside your visit to the grocery store.

Despite their absorbency abilities, paper towels aren’t specifically designed as a litter alternative so can be rather problematic.

Alternating between paper towels and litter is a great way to keep your ferret’s cage clean and tidy. In the first few months, during toilet training, paper towels are a fab way of controlling mess. As your ferret grows, replace paper towels with litter once their toilet training is over.

Are All Litters Safe?

The answer is NO! Not all animal litters are safe for your ferret.

Wood-based litters made from softwood such as cedar and pine contain toxic chemicals that can lead to respiratory issues in your ferret. Softwood is also extremely dusty leading to irritation in your ferret’s eyes and nose.

Clay-based litters are another problematic choice for your ferrets. On contact with liquid, clay becomes soft and sticks to your ferret’s paws when finding a place to poop. Ferrets scoot after doing their business and clay may get stuck in your ferret’s rectum causing severe blockages

Silica litters such as pearls or gel contain chemicals harmful to our ferrets. Ferrets can suffer from silicosis, the inhalation of particles of silica which can be fatal. Extremely expensive and messy, this is one litter type we certainly do not recommend.

Corn-cob litter should be avoided at all costs. These litters are extremely dusty and will cause problems to your ferret’s respiratory system. Being naughty nibblers too, our ferrets tend to ingest materials they come into contact with and corn-cob litters may lead to blockages and gastrointestinal issues.

As a ferret mom, one of the main things I look for when shopping for treats for my ferret is meat-content. Being natural carnivores, meat should be the basis for any food source you feed your ferrets. Treats should have a high meat content of 50% or more and avoid added veggies and grains as these can lead to gastrointestinal upset in our little furry friends. 

Like hedgehogs, ferrets are lactose intolerant so ensure no treats contain any form of dairy product like milk or cheese. Try and stick to products labeled specifically for ferrets as these types of treats have been specifically designed to suit the nutritional support of our pets. 

Storage

Treating your ferret is a fun and fantastic activity but you don’t want to give them all of the excitement at once. Space out treating your ferret between 2-3 days so packaging that is resealable and foil-insulated will ensure their treats keep fresh and no nibbly paws can easily enter them without human supervision.

Diced Beef

Raw beef is a fantastic treat for your ferret. Packed full of iron, this powerful protein will provide all the right vitamins and minerals to keep your ferret’s cardiovascular system in tip-top shape. If your ferret is like mine and on an all-dry kibble diet, a weekly or fortnightly bowl of diced beef can be a well-needed treat after times of fun and play. 

Although ferrets can enjoy cooked beef, it is best to serve raw so simply dice into small cubes and place them into your ferret’s cage. Avoid cross-contaminating their dry kibble with raw meat so if you wish to try your ferret on raw food, it is best to purchase a new bowl to do so. 

Top Tip!: Raw beef is a great source of iron for Jills in Heat (during May-September). Prone to anemia, if not mated, feeding your girls raw meat helps maintain their iron levels and keep them happy and healthier during this time. 

Cooked Poultry

For homes that look to cook up chicken on a regular basis, feeding your ferret a little of your chicken leftovers is a fantastic way of giving them a nutritional boost. Unlike my Jills, my Hob, Kiko, has a preference for cooked chicken and turkey over raw meat, and being a little larger in size, a  low-fat protein like chicken/turkey can help ensure he doesn’t put on any excess weight. 

If your ferret is growing noticeably larger or is a little older and less active, low-fat proteins such as poultry are a great way of rewarding your ferret without worrying about an extra weight gain. Turkey is a great treat for your ferret so when thanksgiving comes around the corner, perhaps save a slice for your caged furry friend. 

Salmon

In its cooked form, salmon is one of the best natural treats to give to your ferret. Bursting with essential Omega-3 oils, salmon helps keep your ferret’s coat and skin glossy, shiny, and full of natural oils. In addition to the fur-boosting properties, salmon is loaded with selenium too which helps regulate your ferret’s immune system helping to fight infections and any nasty bacteria.

No matter what parcel comes through the box, the cardboard and filling is always up for grabs with my trio of furry friends. After the relentless action of removing them from boxes with unsafe material (like plastic bags), my partner and I decided to make a ferret toy just for them. 

After purchasing an Intext Crystal Blue Inflatable Pool for just under $13, we then filled it with foam peanuts that we recycled from an empty postal order and wow…the result was amazing.
